February 12 – Wisdom in Speech

1 Peter 3:10

Introduction:

Today I continue my thoughts about wise living by addressing our speech (what we say, and why we say) what is right or appropriate.

Read:

1 Peter 3:10

For “He who would love life And see good days, Let him refrain his tongue from evil, And his lips from speaking deceit.”

NLT

1 Peter 3:10

“For the Scriptures say, “If you want to enjoy life and see many happy days, keep your tongue from speaking evil and your lips from telling lies.”

James 1:26,

“If anyone among you

thinks he is religious, and does not bridle his tongue but deceives his own heart, this one’s religion is useless.”

NLT

James 1:26

“If you claim to be religious but don’t control your tongue, you are fooling yourself, and your religion is worthless.”

Before you Speak….T.H.I.N.K. – Zig ZIgler

Philippians 4:8

Finally, brethren, whatever things are true, whatever things are noble, whatever things are just, whatever things are pure, whatever things are lovely, whatever things are of good report, if there is any virtue and if there is anything praiseworthy– meditate on these things.”

(NKJ)

Application

: Once again, know your sources!

2. Is it Helpful?

Ecclesiastes 5:3

For a dream comes through much activity, And a fool’s voice is known by his many words.”

(NKJ)

Proverbs 18:21

“The tongue can bring death or life; those who love to talk will reap the consequences.”

(Pro 18:21 NLT)

Question

: But what about a rebuke? Isn’t that biblical?

4. Is it Necessary?

Proverbs 10:9,

“Too much talk leads to sin. Be sensible and keep your mouth shut.”

NLT

James 1:9,

Understand this, my dear brothers and sisters: You must all be quick to listen, slow to speak, and slow to get angry.”

(NLT)

Application

: Don’t mistake / confuse being ‘bold’ for being spiritual!

5. Is it Kind?

Question

? Is your heart in the right place?

Romans 2:4,

“Don’t you see how wonderfully kind, tolerant, and patient God is with you? Does this mean nothing to you? Can’t you see that his kindness is intended to turn you from your sin?”

(NLT)

Galatians 5:22

“But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness,

23

gentleness, self-control. Against such there is no law.”

(Gal 5:22 NKJ)

Pastor Mike’s List:

Conclusion

: We need to be wise when it comes to what we say, when we say it, and how we say things.

Colossal Truth Finale

Introduction: Final Installment of Colossal Truth(s). By way of Review: It is combative in tone and abrupt in style. False teachers have undercut the major doctrines of Christianity: the deity of Christ, lordship, and sufficiency of Christ. Colossians is about setting up the Supremacy of Christ. Supremacy hinges upon Jesus’ uniqueness as God’s eternal, beloved…

Order and Instructions for Christian Households

Introduction: Colossians 3:18-4:1 is a perfect segue to our Father’s Day message last week. This whole section should speak to us more about order and unity than it does about the word submission which usually tends to be the focus in these verses. Transition: You have heard somewhere, maybe here at CLC that the God…

Colossal Truths – New Life

Colossians 3:1-17 Introduction: We left off Chapter 2 of Colossians by verse 8, Don’t let anyone capture you with empty philosophies and high-sounding nonsense that come from human thinking and from the spiritual powers1 of this world, rather than from Christ; (NLT) and 2:16, So don’t let anyone condemn you for what you eat or…
