First and Last Breath

FIRST AND LAST

Genesis 2:7,“Then the LORD God formed the man from the dust of the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living being.”

Big Idea: Every breath God gives us reminds us of three eternal truths: Life is a Gift. Time is a Trust. We are called to Live with Purpose.

INTRODUCTION (5 minutes)

There are only two moments in life that every person experiences but never remembers.

Your first breath…

and one day…your last.

When you entered this world, no one asked about your education, your career, or your accomplishments. Everyone waited for one sound—the cry that proved you were alive.

Everything between your first breath and your last breath is the story of your life.

Genesis tells us something remarkable.

God didn’t simply create Adam.

He leaned in…

He breathed…

and Adam became alive.

The Hebrew word for breath is neshamah, meaning the breath of life, the divine breath that only God can give.

The first thing Adam ever experienced wasn’t the Garden.

It wasn’t Eve.

It wasn’t work.

It was the breath of God.

That means every breath you’ve ever taken has been a reminder that your life began as a gift from God.

So what should we do with the breaths in between?

Today I want us to remember three simple truths.

I. LIFE IS A GIFT (10 minutes)

James 1:17,“Every good and perfect gift is from above…”

• Life is not something we earned.
• None of us applied for it.
• None of us deserved it.
• We simply received it.

Application: We celebrate birthdays every year…but birthdays aren’t really celebrations of getting older.

They’re celebrations of receiving another year we never could have created ourselves.

Genesis 2 – Adam was nothing more than formed dust.

Potential…but no life. Until…God breathed.

Dust became destiny.

That’s what grace does.

Every Breath is Grace

We often thank God for

• promotions.
• For houses.
• For healing.

But we overlook the miracle happening thousands of times every day.

Breathing.

Your lungs are preaching a sermon every second.

“God is still giving.”

Illustration: Imagine someone hands you a beautifully wrapped gift.

You don’t ask,

“What did I do to deserve this?”

You simply receive it with gratitude.

Life is exactly like that.

Application: Grateful people see life differently.

Complaining shrinks.

Joy grows.

When you remember life is a gift…you stop living entitled.

If life is a gift, gratitude should be our first response.

Transition: But gifts are never meant to stay wrapped.

God gives life…so we can do something with it.

II. TIME IS A TRUST (10 minutes)

Psalm 90:12,“Teach us to number our days, that we may gain a heart of wisdom.”

Application: Every one of us has the same twenty-four hours.

The difference isn’t the amount of time.It’s how we steward it.

God gives life…but He also entrusts us with time.

Notice the difference.

Life is given. Time is entrusted.

• A gift belongs to the receiver.
• A trust belongs to the Owner.

Stewardship

We don’t own our days. We manage them.

Jesus constantly taught stewardship.

• Talents.
• Money.
• Relationships.
• Time.

Everything belongs to God.

Ephesians 5, “Make the most of every opportunity.”

• Every opportunity…is another breath.
• Every sunrise…another chance.

Illustration: Imagine borrowing someone’s priceless antique watch.

You wouldn’t throw it around carelessly. Why?

Because it isn’t yours.

Neither is your time.

Questions?

• Where is your attention?
• Where are your priorities?
• What consumes your calendar?
• The greatest thief of purpose isn’t always sin.

Sometimes it’s distraction.

Practical Challenge

• Spend less time scrolling…more time serving.
• Less worrying…more worshipping. Less surviving…more living intentionally.

The greatest investment you’ll ever make isn’t money—it’s today’s moments.

“Purpose doesn’t remove problems, but it gives meaning to perseverance.”

Transition:

God gives us life. God entrusts us with time.

But both point toward something bigger.

Purpose.

III. LIVING WITH PURPOSE (10 minutes)

Ephesians 2:10, “For we are God’s workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared beforehand.”

• You were never created merely to exist. You were designed to contribute.
• The greatest tragedy isn’t dying young.
• The greatest tragedy is living without purpose.

Jesus

Jesus only lived approximately thirty-three years.

Yet every conversation…

every miracle…

every step…

was intentional.

Jesus never hurried…yet He was never late.

Because purpose determines priorities.

Purpose Answers Three Questions

• Why am I here?
• Who am I becoming?
• Who benefits because I lived?

Purpose isn’t found. Purpose is discovered in following Jesus.

Illustration

Think about a compass.It isn’t valuable because it’s beautiful.

It’s valuable because it always points true north.

Purpose keeps your life pointing toward God.

Without purpose…we drift.

With purpose…we influence.

Legacy

One day your breathing will stop.

Your accomplishments will fade.

Your possessions will belong to someone else.

But the people you loved…

served…

encouraged…

and led to Jesus…

will become your eternal legacy.

Preaching Line: The value of your life will never be measured by what you accumulated, but by who you became and whose life you changed.

THE GOSPEL

• Genesis begins with God breathing life into Adam.
• The Gospels tell us Jesus breathed His last on the cross.
• The first Adam received life.
• The last Adam gave His life.

Jesus surrendered His breath…so we could receive eternal life.

Three days later…the tomb was empty.

The One who gave His last breath…breathed again.

Because He lives…our final breath isn’t the end.

It’s the doorway into eternity.

CONCLUSION

When your life is over…people won’t remember

• how busy you were.
• They won’t remember your bank account.
• They won’t remember your social media followers.
• They’ll remember how you lived.

So remember these three truths every morning when you wake up and take your first breath of the day.

Life is a Gift.

Receive it with gratitude.

Time is a Trust.

Steward it wisely.

Live with Purpose.

Invest your life in what matters forever.

Closing Challenge

Tomorrow morning…

• before you reach for your phone…before you check your email…
• before your feet hit the floor…
• take one deep breath.

Remember where it came from.

Then ask God:

1. “Lord, thank You for this gift.
2. Help me steward this day well.
3. Show me how to live on purpose.”

Because every breath is a gift.

And one day…

your last breath on earth…will become your first breath in eternity.
