Love More Intentionally

Luke 24:49

Introduction: Last week I spoke to you about ‘getting a little closer.’

This week I want to encourage you to ‘staying a little longer.’

This week I want to address the need for us as Christians to battle! To fight for our faith, our family, our church, our communities, our nation and our world.

I Corinthians 13

“Intentionality refers to acts being deliberate or purposeful. [Being intentional means] deliberately spending time together, purposefully placing the need of others above your own” (source: I’ll Push You).

  1. Foster Respect

Does not ‘dishonor others’; ‘always protects’

Romans 10:12, ‘Be devoted to one another in love. Honor one another above yourselves.

Philippians 2:3, ‘Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves.’

University of West London uses as a guide for student conduct the following:

  1. Be kind and courteous
    1. Be polite, avoid interrupting or causing disturbances.
    1. Listen to others and respect differences in beliefs and opinions.
    1. Think before you speak and watch your tone.
    1. Avoid gossip/discriminatory remarks and bullying.
    1. Respect personal space and personal property.
    1. Understand everyone has their own experiences and beliefs.
    1. Speak up if others are being disrespectful
    1. Be willing to evolve and admit mistakes.

Transition
:

  1. Practice Gratitude

Love is ‘kind’; ‘it is not self-seeking’

Ephesians 1:16I have not stopped giving thanks for you, remembering you in my prayers’.(NIV)

  1. Establish / Understand Boundaries

‘is not easily angered’; ‘always protects’

Boundaries generate safety in relationships. When your privacy is respected, you are more likely to feel heard, validated and appreciated. But most of all, you are not taken for granted by either your loved ones or your colleagues and supervisors

  1. Be prepared to Forgive

‘Keeps no record of wrongs’; ‘is patient’

Application: Scientists who study forgiveness have long agreed that it is one of the most important contributors to a healthy relationship. Studies have shown that couples who practice forgiveness are more likely to enjoy longer, more satisfying romantic relationships.

Releasing Anger, Hurt, and Frustration is Key to Forgiveness.

Forgiveness Liberates you From the Toxicity of Resentment.

  • Choose being supportive

‘Does not boast’; ‘always persevere’

Hebrews 10:24-25 ‘Let us think of ways to motivate one another to acts of love and good works. And let us not neglect our meeting together, as some people do, but encourage one another, especially now that the day of his return is drawing near. (NLT)

  • Responsible & Accountable

‘Does not delight in evil’; ‘always hopes’

  1. Open rebuke better than hidden love.
