One Nation, Many People, One God of Blessing

Psalm 33:12 (NKJV)

“Blessed is the nation whose God is the LORD, the people He has chosen as His own inheritance.”

Introduction “This morning I want us to discover three timeless truths that God’s Word teaches about a nation that experiences His blessing.”

1. “God” = אֱלֹהָיו (Elohav) Hebrew: אֱלֹהָיו

Transliteration: Elohav Root: אֱלֹהִים (Elohim)

Meaning: “his God”

This is the possessive form of Elohim, emphasizing God as the powerful Creator, Judge, and Sovereign over all.

Elohim is the most common Hebrew word for God in the Old Testament and speaks of: God’s power His majest His authority as Creator (Genesis 1:1)

2. “LORD” = יְהוָה (YHWH or Yahweh) Hebrew: יְהוָה

Transliteration: YHWH (commonly pronounced Yahweh)

Often called the Tetragrammaton (the four sacred Hebrew letters).

English Bibles usually translate it in all capital letters as LORD.

This is God’s covenant name, revealed to Moses in Exodus 3:14–15.

I. A Nation Is Blessed When God Is Honored

Anchor Text – Psalm 33:12

“Blessed is the nation whose God is the LORD…”

Psalm 33 gives us the principle.

But Proverbs tells us how that principle is lived out.

Proverbs 14:34 (NKJV) “Righteousness exalts a nation, But sin is a reproach to any people.”

• Notice that Solomon doesn’t say wealth exalts a nation.
• He doesn’t say military strength exalts a nation.
• He doesn’t even say education or prosperity exalts a nation.

He says righteousness.

The word “exalts” means to lift up…to elevate…to strengthen.

Application: Throughout history, nations have risen because they embraced justice, integrity, and reverence for God.

Likewise, nations decline when they abandon righteousness.

America has been blessed in remarkable ways.

But every blessing should remind us of the One who gave it.

James tells us, “Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above.”

Our prayer should never simply be,

Application: “Lord, bless America.”

Our prayer should also be, “Lord, help America honor You.”

Because wherever God is honored… His blessing follows.

II. A Nation Is Secure When It Trusts God

Psalm 20:7 (NKJV) “Some trust in chariots, and some in horses; But we will remember the name of the LORD our God.”

David understood something every generation must learn.

Application: Every nation places its confidence somewhere.

• Some trust military power.
• Some trust political systems.
• Some trust financial markets.
• Some trust technology.

Israel’s neighboring nations trusted horses and chariots. Those were the tanks and fighter jets of David’s day.

David wasn’t condemning preparation. He was condemning misplaced trust.

He reminds us that ultimate security is never found in human strength.

It is found in God.

That doesn’t mean we fail to appreciate our military.

Quite the opposite.

• We thank God for those who serve.
• We honor those who sacrifice.
• We pray for our leaders.

But ultimately…

our confidence isn’t in our defenses. – Our confidence is in the Lord.

That’s why David could later write, “Our soul waits for the LORD; He is our help and our shield.”

Real security isn’t the absence of danger. It’s the presence of God.

Proverbs 3:5-6 – Trust in the lord with all your heart

III. A Nation Is Strong When Its Character Reflects God

Micah 6:8 (NKJV) “He has shown you, O man, what is good; And what does the LORD require of you But to do justly, To love mercy, And to walk humbly with your God?”

Power alone never guarantees permanence.

History is filled with mighty empires that disappeared. Why?

Because power without character eventually collapses.

God has always cared more about character than appearances.

Notice Micah’s three words.

• Justice.
• Mercy.
• Humility.

Those aren’t merely private virtues. They’re the foundation of healthy communities.

Jesus builds upon this when He says,

“You are the salt of the earth.” “You are the light of the world.”

The Church influences society not by shouting louder…but by living differently.

• Integrity.
• Kindness.
• Forgiveness.
• Compassion.
• Truth.

Those qualities reflect God’s character.

Character isn’t built overnight. It’s built one decision at a time.

• One honest conversation.
• One kept promise.
• One forgiven offense.
• One act of generosity.
• One humble choice.

When God’s people reflect God’s character…they become one of God’s greatest blessings to their nation.

Conclusion:

What makes a nation truly blessed?

• Not merely wealth.
• Not merely power.
• Not merely influence.

God’s Word tells us: A nation is blessed when God is honored. “Righteousness exalts a nation…” (Proverbs 14:34)

A nation is secure when it trusts God. “Some trust in chariots… but we will remember the name of the LORD our God.” (Psalm 20:7)

A nation is strong when its character reflects God.”Do justly, love mercy, and walk humbly with your God.” (Micah 6:8)

As we celebrate America’s 250th birthday, let’s thank God for our nation.

• Let’s pray for our leaders.
• Let’s honor those who have served.
• But above all, let’s commit ourselves to honoring God, trusting God, and reflecting God.

Because the hope of America has never ultimately rested in Washington.

It rests in the God who blesses nations, the Savior who transforms hearts, and the Church that faithfully lives out the gospel.

May we be the kind of people through whom God is pleased to bless our nation.
