Rest – September 23

Matthew 11:28-30

Introduction

: I want to begin by thanking those who took care of business while Sara and I were away the last 2 Sundays.

Application

: The Idea (at least in part) for any vacation/time away is rest. Sara and I had 4 weeks straight without being alone 1 day. Even on our vacation we were not alone.

No matter where you go, doesn’t it often feel like you can’t wait to get home to ‘rest’?

I want to speak about REST today.

Rest as a

condition

, not as a

position

.

Jesus says, come unto me,…(and you will) ‘find rest for your souls’.

Rest

= anapauo {an-ap-ow’-o}

1) to cause or permit one to cease from any movement or labour in order to recover and collect his strength 2) to give rest, refresh, to give one’s self rest, take rest 3) to keep quiet, of calm and patient expectation.

Soul

=

psuche

{psoo-khay’}

1) breath 1a) the breath of life 1a1) the vital force which animates the body and shows itself in breathing 1a1a) of animals 1a12) of men 1b) life 1c) that in which there is life 1c1) a living being, a living soul 2) the soul 2a) the seat of the feelings, desires, affections, aversions (our heart, soul etc.) 2b) the (human) soul in so far as it is constituted that by the right use of the aids offered it by God it can attain its highest end and secure eternal blessedness, the soul regarded as a moral being designed for everlasting life 2c) the soul as an essence which differs from the body and is not dissolved by death (distinguished from other parts of the body)

What keeps us from sleeping well?

Insomnia?

National Sleep Foundation:

Transition

: I need you to understand that I am not talking about being tired…. we all get tired. I’m specifically addressing the matter of rest.

Propositional

: We all need rest: Physical rest, emotional rest and spiritual rest.

From our passage Jesus says:

yoke

is a wooden beam normally used between a pair of oxen or other animals to enable them to pull together on a load when working in pairs, as oxen usually do; some

yokes

 are fitted to individual animals.

From Jesus we have learned that:

‘Weeping may endure for a night, but joy comes in the morning’.

Peace is a synonymous to rest.

Jehovah Shalom

The woman at the well

found ‘rest’ although being told that she and others would come back to the well over and over.

Exodus 33:14

And He said, “My Presence will go

with you

, and I will give you rest.” (Exo 33:14 NKJ)

NLT

Mark 6:31

Then Jesus said, “Let’s go off by ourselves to a quiet place and rest awhile.” He said this because there were so many people coming and going that Jesus and his apostles didn’t even have time to eat. (Mar 6:31 NLT)

Finding Hope

) Exercise Faith

Transition/Conclusion

: How might we find rest?

Jesus concludes by stating

‘for my yoke is easy and my burden is light’.

Unlike the burdens and yokes that the Pharisees placed upon the people…Jesus was stating that it’s not about works or requirements…that can be burdensome.

John 10:10

August 7 – Dealing with Offense

Introduction: It seems that everyone is offended about something! Whether it’s political candidates, commercials, rainbows (symbols), I mean you name it! Offenses have a way of bringing great discord and hurt in families, communities, races, even individual families. Luke 10:38-41 I think it is fair to say that Martha was ‘offended’ over the activity (in…

June 12 2016 – Life is short

Ecclesiastes 3:1 Introduction: As most of you are aware Sara and I had the opportunity to witness some pretty incredible stuff a few weeks ago. Question: One of the questions that I’ve been asked is what left the most lasting impression. My answer (maybe strangely enough to some of you) is time itself. Whenever you stand in places /…
