Resurrection Life

Easter Sunday 2025

John 11:25-26

Introduction:

The Power of the Resurrection:

  1. A Demonstration of God’s Power and Authority: Eph 1:19-23

The resurrection of Jesus is seen as a powerful affirmation of God’s victory over death and sin.

What we need to understand is that there was a tremendous demonstration; a magnificent display of God’s power at the resurrection of Christ from the dead, which the Bible calls…

‘the Exceeding Greatness of His power’ and the Bible declares here that this power is ‘toward us.

The Greek word translated here as ‘exceeding’ is ‘huperballo’ meaning to throw beyond the usual mark

The Greek word translated ‘greatness’ is megathos which means ‘magnitude or size’

there is a description given here of power that is incredibly large, and it does not come across in the English as well as in the original Greek.

The size and magnitude of power being spoken of here is difficult to express in English but it is power of tremendous size – beyond comprehension. This is talking about power that is thrown way beyond the normal, power of incredibly great magnitude.

When God raised Jesus from the dead, He really ‘flexed His muscles’ so to speak and put on a vast demonstration of His power. He really showed how powerful He is once and for all!

II. A Promise of Eternal Life and Spiritual Renewal: Romans 8:1

  1. ‘But if the Spirit of Him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, He who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through His Spirit who dwells in you’. (Rom 8:11 NKJ)

Christians believe that through faith in Jesus, they are given the power of the Holy Spirit, which is the same power that raised Jesus from the dead.

This power is believed to empower believers to overcome sin, live a life pleasing to God, and experience a transformed relationship with Him.

The resurrection also offers a hope of future resurrection, where believers will be reunited with their bodies in a new, glorified form at the end of time.

III. A Source of Hope and Encouragement: John 11:25-26

The resurrection provides believers with a source of strength and encouragement, especially during times of difficulty and suffering.

It reminds them that even death is not the final word and that God’s power is ultimately greater than any challenge they may face.

IV. A call to Live in a New Way: Galatians 5:25

The power of the resurrection is not just a historical event but also a present-day reality.

It calls believers to live in a way that reflects the power of their new life in Christ, demonstrating His love and grace to others.

In essence, the power of resurrection is a multifaceted concept that encompasses God’s power, a promise of eternal life, a source of hope, and a call to live a transformed life in Christ.

‘Since we are living by the Spirit, let us follow the Spirit’s leading in every part of our lives. 26 Let us not become conceited, or provoke one another, or be jealous of one another’. (Gal 5:25 NLT)

This verse encourages believers to walk in the Spirit, meaning to be led by the Holy Spirit’s influence and guidance. It suggests that living according to the Spirit involves following His direction and allowing Him to transform our lives. Bible Gateway provides the text of the verse in different translations.
