1 Timothy 4:1-12
Introduction:
The letters of the Apostle Paul to his young protégé Timothy have always served me as a once younger pastor/leader to now a little older/wiser mentor pastor/leader.
1 Timothy chapter 4 broadly follows a pattern of exhortation with ancient precedents traditional of Jewish teaching.
The speaker sets before his audience two paths or between two prospects between which they have to choose depending on how they respond to the challenge.
In Verses 4:1-5, Paul addresses the prospect of defection:
It is the Holy Spirit who has and is declaring that some will fall away / defect / abandon sound faith:
The key word here (
ahistemi
), can be translated “fall away,” “become apostate,” “desert,” “renounce.”
Transition
: The alternate (to be wise, sound, complete) is not only to be pursued by Timothy but he is to teach these principles.
Transition
: Then specifically, Paul urges Timothy (in light of his inexperience and youth) to pursue daily being an example!
