James 1:5-8
Introduction: I’d like to speak to you today aboutFaith, Expectations & Stability.
- The Truth About Wisdom
- Everyone needs wisdom
- The wisdom we seek needs to be God’s wisdom.
Wisdom in the Proverbs:
Proverbs 1:7 ‘The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge, But fools despise wisdom and instruction. (NKJ)
NKJ Proverbs 2:6 ‘For the LORD gives wisdom; From His mouth come knowledge and understanding’.
We need to understand that all ‘wisdom’ is not equal.
Godly Wisdom v. Worldly Wisdom
“Wisdom of the world“ refers to: The phrase ‘worldly wisdom’ is from the Apostle Paul’s letter to the Corinthians, where he contrasts human wisdom with divine revelation.
- Wisdom of this world’ is humanity’s accumulated knowledge, cultural understanding, and practical intelligence, but in religious contexts (especially Christian),
- it’s often contrasted with divine wisdom, seen as inferior, self-focused, and even foolish compared to God’s truth,
- highlighting that worldly cleverness can fail where divine wisdom provides true guidance, such as through faith and humility.
- It encompasses general human insight (love, knowledge, truth) but also worldly ambition, prioritizing self-gain over spiritual understanding, and is considered limited by its focus on the physical realm rather than the eternal.
1 Corinthians 3:19: “For the wisdom of this world is foolishness with God. For it is written, “He catches the wise in their own craftiness.”
1 Corinthians 1:20-21: Paul questions where the wise men and debaters are, stating God has made their wisdom foolish and used the “foolishness of preaching” (the cross) to save believers.
1 Cor.1:17-18, 26 ‘For [a]you see your calling, brethren, that not many wise according to the flesh, not many mighty, not many [b]noble, are called. 27 But God has chosen the foolish things of the world to put to shame the wise, and God has chosen the weak things of the world to put to shame the things which are mighty; 28 and the [c]base things of the world and the things which are despised God has chosen, and the things which are not, to bring to nothing the things that are, 29 that no flesh should glory in His presence’.
NKJ 1 Corinthians 3:18 ‘Let no one deceive himself. If anyone among you seems to be wise in this age, let him become a fool that he may become wise’.
‘Wisdom of this world…’ “The wisdom of this world is sensual and demonic” is a key phrase from the Bible, specifically James 3:15, describing a worldly, self-centred understanding that contrasts with divine wisdom, characterized by envy, strife, and evil, rather than purity, peace, and mercy. This concept contrasts earthly, “soulish” (natural/sensual) thinking with heavenly wisdom that brings good fruits, highlighting that worldly knowledge often leads to disorder and conflict.
Human wisdom, detached from God, often fails to know or understand Him,
James tells us that God will supply ‘generous amounts’.
Application: Wisdom for everything we need:
- Heart and Character Transformation: Men often possess knowledge and skills but lack the inner wisdom needed to shape their character. Wisdom is needed to move beyond pride (which knowledge brings) to humility.
- Relationships and Family:
- Decision Making and
- Life Direction:
- Navigating Trials and Transitions:
- Work and Purpose:
With all of that established…let’s move on a little.
- Faith & Expectations
Back to James. Read 1:6-8 NLT James 1:6 ‘But when you ask him, be sure that your faith is in God alone. Do not waver, for a person with divided loyalty is as unsettled as a wave of the sea that is blown and tossed by the wind. 7 Such people should not expect to receive anything from the Lord. 8 Their loyalty is divided between God and the world, and they are unstable in everything they do’.
- Asking in faith is the act of praying with total confidence in God’s power, goodness, and will, rather than doubting or relying solely on human effort.
- It involves believing you have already received what you asked for—or trusting God to provide the right answer—before seeing the physical result.
II. The place & Role of Stability
- This approach requires a stable, unwavering mindset, as described in James 1:6-8, focusing on God’s character.
The Double-Minded Man: Being double-minded means being wavering, undecided, or having divided loyalties, often described as having “two minds” or “two souls,” leading to instability, inconsistency, and inner conflict, especially in faith, where one is torn between opposing beliefs or desires, as warned in the Bible’s book of James. A double-minded person struggles with making firm choices, acting one way today and another tomorrow, and lacks the clear focus needed to trust in guidance.
Key characteristics
- Divided heart/soul: Literally means “two-souled,” pulled between opposing desires or beliefs.
- Indecisive & wavering: Unable to commit, constantly changing opinions and feelings.
- Unstable: Lacking firm footing, leading to restlessness and inner conflict.
- Hypocritical: Honoring God with words but not with a sincere heart, or trying to serve two masters.
- Lacking faith: Doubting God’s provision during trials, seeking their own way instead.
Consequences
- Spiritual stagnation: Ineffective prayer and spiritual growth.
- Emotional turmoil: Confusion, restlessness, and internal conflict.
- Lack of purpose: Difficulty finding direction and meaning.
In essence
A double-minded person struggles with commitment and sincerity, living in a state of internal conflict, which makes them unreliable in their actions and faith, unlike a single-minded believer focused on God.
Conclusion: Asking God for wisdom or anything else requires faith, expectations and Stability.
