What Did I Miss?

Matthew 26:31-46

:

: Ever wonder what we miss when we fall asleep (spiritually)?

By falling asleep I speak of the times that we are disconnected from what God is wanting to say and teach us.

:

: Gethsemane:

, a press, and

, oil. Probably the place where the produce of the mount of Olives was prepared for use. The garden of the oil-press.

‘Stay in this place, while I go over there.’

: Jesus will always be close, but he may not always seem present or may seem distant!

: ‘But stay here (there).’

: Even spirit-filled,

empowered believers…yet we want to run away every time we are pressed!

: Let me move on to a second consideration.

26:37

Why these three? Any special reason? Maybe not but maybe! But let’s look at it anyway.

: Could it be that those most invested, most dedicated; those with particular, significant and specific ministerial responsibilities, are those being warned the most?

: Those who maybe thought they had the ‘upper hand’ were those most vulnerable?

‘Therefore let him who thinks he

take heed lest he fall’. (NKJ)

: How often have we ‘ratherd’ things be different?

: But what is God’s will? Does doing/fulfilling God’s will matter to us?

Three times Jesus finds them asleep! In verse 42 we find the polar opposites of the human tendency vs. spiritual opportunity.

= give strict attention to, be cautions, active.

– experiment, attempt, trial, proving. The trial of one’s fidelity, integrity, virtue and constancy.

Your inclinations are good-ye are truly sincere; but your good purposes will be overpowered by your timidity. Ye wish to continue steadfast in your adherence to your Master; but your fears will lead you to desert him,

: After all this…he asks, ‘Are you still sleeping and resting?’ –

“And when you pray, you must not be like the hypocrites. For they love to stand and pray in the synagogues and at the street corners, that they may be seen by others. Truly, I say to you, they have received their reward. 

But when you pray, go into your room and shut the door and pray to your Father who is in secret. And your Father who sees in secret will reward you.

“And when you pray, do not heap up empty phrases as the Gentiles do, for they think that they will be heard for their many words. 

Do not be like them, for your Father knows what you need before you ask him.

Pray then like this:

“Our Father in heaven,

hallowed be your name.

Your kingdom come,

your will be done,

on earth as it is in heaven.

Give us this day our daily bread,

and forgive us our debts,

as we also have forgiven our debtors.

And lead us not into temptation,

but deliver us from evil.
